Business Need / Purpose of Role

Reporting to the Product Manager, the Product Specialist Valves will work collaboratively with internal departments and external stakeholders to support business development, sales of products (valves) and aftermarket services, while ensuring that customer requirements are met.

Objectives & Measurement - Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical support and expertise to account managers, application/field engineers, as well as customers for specific issues.
  • Interpreting engineering specifications and selecting equipment to meet customer requirements.
  • Preparing product cost takeoff and technical bids for equipment packages
  • Maintaining ongoing communication with suppliers and internal stakeholders
  • Participating in the product proposal process in partnership with sales and engineering departments
  • Preparing sales and product presentations for the sales team
  • Developing an understanding of Mining and Oil and Gas customers, EPCs, in regards with products used and application specificities;
  • Providing Applications Engineering support on related capital projects and brownfield inquiries/opportunities;
  • Supporting aftermarket sales through field/site visits to understand how products operate and wear, and to work with the technology centre to develop product/material improvements in line with customer expectations
  • Learning and sharing inter-company best practices
  • Assist the Product Manager in establishing price list and selection tools as to render the sales team as autonomous as possible;
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor


The selected individual will be expected to:


  • Develop an understanding of Oil Sands customers, EPCs, and products used
  • Provide Applications Engineering support on capital projects and brownfield inquiries/opportunities
  • Support aftermarket sales through field/site visits to understand how our equipment operates and wears, and to work with the technology centre to develop product/material improvements in line with customer expectations
  • Learn and share inter-company best practices

Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications


Bachelor of Engineering Degree with 3 to 5 years of engineering experience. Eng. licence is ideal. Mining or mineral processing education or experience will be considered an asset.


Prior experience with roles involving applications, customer-support, sales, or manufacturing environments is considered an asset.  Strong aptitude for commercial activities and customer service. Ability to read drawings.



Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. French is an asset. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.


Mathematical Skills:

Above average numerical skills to understand, interpret and troubleshoot complex engineering problems and commercial aspects of product sales and marketing.   Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.

Ability to use basic algebra and geometry. 


Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to solve complex practical problems and make independent decisions under minimal supervision.


Computer Skills:

Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.  Prior experience using ERP/MRP systems, AutoCAD and/or other Design or engineering software will be considered an asset.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations, Special Skills:

Eng. Designation with additional product specialization and/or sales/marketing knowledge.


Physical Requirements: The employee must be able to sit, stand, and lift more than 15 pounds.  


Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but may vary to moderate at customer sites. In certain areas of the facility personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required, including safety glasses and steel-toed shoes, and ear plugs.


Limited travel may be required.
