Business Need / Purpose of Role

Perform duties required to provide strategic sourcing, procurement and demand management principles and practices for a wide variety of technical and non-technical materials and services required to support customer requirements.

Objectives & Measurement - Key Responsibilities

Including but not limited to:

  • Develop strategic partnerships with key suppliers with open and frequent communications
  • Understand needs of the business and relative capacity and limitations of suppliers
  • Work with engineers and suppliers to clarify material requirements and submit and analyze quotations for new and non-standard items
  • Assure accurate and timely placement and delivery of purchase orders, adjust per needs of the business and deliver clear communications to those suppliers impacted
  • Update stakeholders on supplier performance against specific needs and follow up on expedites and current schedules for positive impact to customer service
  • Develop and negotiate supplier contracts and agreements
  • Provide demand forecasting, expediting orders and initiating supplier performance corrective actions
  • As purchasing subject matter expert, ensure system performance and capability is improved and maintained to maximize benefits of the available functionality
  • Initiate improvement tactics for supplier on-time delivery, pricing and lead times based on credible information and performance trends, including alternative supply options
  • Provide input to cross-functional system developments and enhancements
  • Make a contribution to the development of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement efforts
  • Support equipment maintenance and tooling requirements to ensure uninterrupted manufacturing operations
  • Provide direction and back-up coverage within team as needed
  • Develop reports within, and on behalf of, Purchasing group.
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 3 to 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  SCMP designation or equivalent preferred.


Specific experience in industrial manufacturing preferred. Previous experience sourcing/purchasing steel pipe and pipe components would be an asset.


Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.



Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Computer Skills:

Requires the ability to operate a variety of standard business machines, such as computer and job related software (Microsoft Office & Lotus Notes), calculator, telephone, fax, photocopier, etc. Experience with GP/Dynamics ERP system a plus.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Requires a valid passport or ability to obtain one for potential international travel.


Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and communicate effectively in an office environment; is occasionally required to lift up to ten pounds; specific abilities required by this job include close and distance vision and hearing to identify hazards while in manufacturing environment.


Work Environment:

General office environment; limited exposure to noise, fumes, and temperature changes when working in the manufacturing area; PPE required.
