Business Need / Purpose of Role

Working from our Edmonton location and reporting to the Materials Management Supervisor, the incumbent will be responsible for complex purchasing activities and supervising purchasing staff.

Objectives & Measurement - Key Responsibilities

Including but not limited to: 

  • Develop and improve current purchasing processes for Weir Oil & Gas Pressure Control according to company strategy, API-Q1 and ISO 9001
  • Prepare purchase requisitions, approve and issue purchase orders in accordance with company policy and negotiated terms and conditions.
  • Resolve open Purchase orders, escalations and expediting needs.
  • Ensure that all procured material is ordered and receive on time, according to quality standards to support production schedule and strategy.
  • Liaise with sales, product management and engineering departments to assist with planning, estimating and executing of major projects.
  • Maintain procurement files including tracking of purchasing activity, measurements, tracking supplier quality, creating and implementing KPI’s, and monitoring supplier performance / compliance.
  • Monitor macro trends in supplier and contract base, as well as price increases, and quality-related issues.
  • Introduce and develop strategic global sourcing – developing relationships with key suppliers and customers and ultimately reducing costs and securing agreements.
  • Develop purchasing cost reduction programs including: value analysis, inventory management, cost vs. estimate and/or established cost savings.
  • Manage supplier performance, quality and compliance with requirements by leading supplier audits.
  • Negotiate major agreements.
  • Liaise with Accounts Payable to ensure accurate and timely payment of invoices, as necessary for all business completed with suppliers.

Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

Post-secondary degree or diploma in a technical discipline OR Bachelors Degree in Business or related area with equivalent experience in technical environments. PMAC, CPP or Supply Chain Management Professional Certification.  Minimum of 10 years of experience in a purchasing and/or supply chain capacity. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a similar technical industry (knowledge of wellhead equipment including, valves, spools, flanges or other related equipment). Proficient in material specifications (e.g. ASTM, ASME, etc). Proven experience negotiating supplier agreements and developing supplier relationships. Prior experience with ERP software, preferably Syteline 8. Familiarity and proven experience with ISO, Lean, Kaizen, and EHS. Project Management knowledge or experience would be considered an asset. Advanced computer skills required (Microsoft Office / Windows). Prior supervisory experience


Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.



Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Computer Skills:

Requires the ability to operate a variety of standard business machines, such as computer and job related software (Microsoft Office & Lotus Notes), calculator, telephone, fax, photocopier, etc. Experience with Syteline ERP system a plus.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Requires a valid passport or ability to obtain one for potential international travel.


Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear, use hands to finger, handle and touch objects; is occasionally required to stand or walk; is occasionally required to lift up to ten pounds; specific vision abilities required by this

job include close and distance vision.


Work Environment:

General office environment; limited exposure to noise, fumes, and temperature changes when working in the manufacturing area; PPE required.
