Business Need / Purpose of Role

Ensure prompt, safe and efficient flow of freight and information to ensure production, loading and delivery functions are completed in accordance with approved plans and timelines.
The Traffic and Logistics Specialist works in partnership with the Sales, Supply Chain and Operations department with the responsibility of planning logistics and managing customs (import/export), traffic, and delivery of purchased and/or sold products according to customer requirements and approved plans. This is a temporary (12 month) maternity leave replacement role.

Objectives & Measurement - Key Responsibilities

Including but not limited to:

  • Identifying the most efficient methods for domestic and international shipments, negotiating rates with carriers and monitoring performance of different vendors.
  • Scheduling bookings with freight forwarders, maintaining tracking reports and provide arrival information as required to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinating domestic and international shipments from departure to arrival and following up on customs clearance, duty payments and receipt of shipments, providing proof of deliveries where required.
  • Identify and negotiate with regional, national and international carriers to maximize service levels and minimize total cost and transit times
  • Maintaining confidential files, reports, customs shipping log Customs clearance documents, records and department filing system as required and disposing of obsolete files in accordance with established norms
  • Interpreting data and preparing reports and billings for internal and external usage
  • Monitoring freight bill auditing and payment processes, approving freight invoices and reporting where required.
  • Assist in implementation and/or maintenance of corporate Transportation Management System
  • Provide support for expediting materials locally and internationally
  • In conjunction with Weir Customs Compliance Center and Corporate Global Indirect Purchasing Center, the incumbent may be asked to participate in traffic studies, rates, budgets ,routes, modes of shipment and audits
  • The incumbent will be responsible for keeping current on all rules and regulations governing the movement of materials both domestically and internationally.

Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications

 Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree or College Diploma in a technical or commercial discipline with at least 5 years of traffic and/or logistics experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience in a relevant industry.  Prior experience with domestic and cross-border freight and international import/export required. Ability to work flexible hours would be considered an asset.

 

Language:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees to the organization. Ability to influence and negotiate with suppliers and internal stakeholders.

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of ERP software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.


Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and sit for long periods of time. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision. Work Environment:

Protective Equipment must be worn in certain areas of the facility The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
