    Business Need / Purpose of Role

    Weir Marine Engineering (WME) is looking for an IT Network Specialist to join our team and contribute to the development, test and evaluation of IT networks onboard the Royal Canadian Navy ships and submarines. This is a permanent, full-time position at the NETE facility in Montreal (LaSalle), Quebec,


    In this position, you will develop the documentation and the configuration to evaluate and test network and security designs, provided by the Team’s network architects, on replicas of ship systems in a lab environment. You will also develop the procedures to automate and deploy the configurations on the pre-production environment, and to use for deployment in production on ships by coastal support staff. You will have the chance to learn new technologies and integrate them in a very unique environment, based on SDN concepts, cyber defense and cyber monitoring.


    This is a technical, hands-on position, where you will be expected to support projects led by others and share your expertise with team members. It is not an internal IT operations role, does not involve any user support, and does not have any on-call requirement.

    Objectives & Measurement - Key Responsibilities

    Including but not limited to:

    • Conduct technology investigations, technical evaluations and tests (integration, performance, security, etc.);
    • Develop detailed functional and security related test plans
    • Set up and configure the required test environments in a lab setting;
    • Produce tested/approved configurations and implementation procedures for deployment on client production networks;
    • Maintain and support lab and pre-production network test environments;
    • Perform evaluation and impact assessment of proposed changes to networks; and
    • Provide technical expertise and assistance to other team members.

    Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications


    • 5+ years of IT experience including experience


    • Bilingual (English/French) with proficiency in technical writing in English and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels with peers, supervisors and client

    Technical Skills

    • WAN optimization deployments and configuration, preferably with Riverbed Technologies;
    • LAN and WAN based QoS deployments and configuration;
    • Layer 2/3 switching, including expertise in VLANs, PVLANs, RSTP, 802.1x, HSRP, vPC/LAG;
    • Cisco 4000 and ASR1000 series routers;
    • Cisco Nexus 9000 and Catalyst 9500, 9300, series switches; and
    • VMware NSX, VXLAN and SDN concepts.


    Knowledge and experience in the following areas are applicable to the environment and would be an asset:

    • Wireless LAN deployments, preferably on Aruba technologies;
    • Routing topologies, namely OSPF, EIGRP and BGP (mainly Cisco);
    • Palo Alto Firewalls
    • Arcsight Data Platform/ESM;
    • Tenable Security Center and Nessus
    • Linux Operating Systems;
    • Ansible automation;



    Eligible to obtain a Government of Canada security clearance (requires Canadian citizenship and 10 years of residence in Canada).
